SSA Administrator Scholarships

The School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) recognizes the need to attract qualified persons into the field of school administration. Therefore, SSA solicits applications from Alabama educators who are pursuing graduate degrees in school administration. SSA has increased the number of scholarships from two (2) to four (4), in the amount of $1,000 each. The degree may be at the M.S./M.A., A.A./Ed.S, or Ed.D./Ph.D. levels, and the recipient may be either a teacher or practicing administrator. Applications are mailed to superintendents and all SSA members during the first week of February each year. You may also download the SSA Administrator Scholarship Application form here. The application deadline for the program is usually the first week of April, and is stated clearly on the application form.

SSA Student Scholarships

The School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) solicits applications for scholarships from high school seniors intending to pursue a Bachelors degree in education. SSA will award nine (9) scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to a student in each SSA district. SSA recognizes the importance of attracting quality young people into the teaching profession and desires to do everything possible to achieve this goal. Applications are mailed to superintendents and all SSA members during the first week in February each year. You may also download the SSA High School Student Scholarship Application here. The application deadline for the program is usually the first week of April, and is stated clearly on the application. Please help disseminate the applications to high schools in your school system.

SSA Leadership Award

Each year the SSA Awards Committee nominates a superintendent to receive the SSA Leadership Award and the recipient will be a finalist for the CLAS Leadership Award. The winner will be recognized at the CLAS Conference.

2007 Recipient: Dr. Richard Gardner, Sheffield City Superintendent
2006 Recipient:  Dr. Terry Jenkins, Auburn City Superintendent
2005 Recipient:  Mr. Evan Major, Shelby County Superintendent

AASA Champion of Children Award - (National)

This award, sponsored by AASA and A.T. Cross Company, is designed to recognize a nationally known non-educator whose contributions have significantly and positively influenced the lives of children. Nomination forms are sent to each state executive during August and are due to national during November. The judging process is handled exclusively by national. The winner is recognized at the National Conference on Education in February.

AASA Distinguished Service Award - (National)

Nominees for this award sponsored by AASA have to have been a member of the Association for at least ten years. A nominee has to have been retired prior to the calendar year the award is presented. Service need not be consecutive or inactive status at the time of recognition. Nomination forms are sent to each state executive during August, but are also available on the AASA website beginning May 1 of each year. Nomination forms are due to AASA by September 15. The judging process is handled exclusively by national and the winner is announced at the National Conference on Education during February.

AASA Civic Star Award - (National)

This award, sponsored by AASA and Sodexho School Services, recognizes school districts that have teamed with their communities to develop and implement innovative programs that advance learning. The application forms for this award are sent to each state executive, to every AASA National member, and every district (members and non-members) during February, following their national conference. Application forms are due to national by June 30. The judging process is handled exclusively by national. Both the state and national winners are recognized during the AASA National Conference on Education in February. State winners receive plaques commemorating their efforts. The national winner receives $10,000 ($5,000 for the school district and $5,000 for the district's scholarship fund).
