At the request of several Alabama superintendents, the Alabama Best Practices Center and School Superintendents of Alabama have joined hands to create the Superintendents' Leaders Network, funded by the generosity of the Malone Family Foundation.

Modeled after the Best Practices Center's successful Key Leaders Network for principals and district leaders, the goal of the Superintendents' Leaders Network is to engage forward-thinking superintendents in an ongoing forum about strategies to improve teaching and learning in their schools.

A steering committee made up of Tommy Bice, Randy Fuller, Eric Mackey, Charles Mason, Susan Lockwood and Hank Jones is working with Alabama Best Practices Center staff and consultants (Cathy Gassenheimer and Jackie Walsh) to develop the content and processes for the 2008-09 year. The general theme for the Network in 2008-09 will be strategic thinking and problem-solving as they relate to improved teaching and learning. Participants will be provided with reading materials in advance of the first retreat and will be asked to come prepared to discuss and reflect on the reading material and related issues. The process will provide participants with knowledge, skills, and the opportunity to incorporate what is learned into district work.

The Superintendents' Leaders Network will meet three times during the 2008-2009 school year. The first meeting will be a two-day retreat, on September 25-26, 2008. Two additional one-day meetings will be held on January 9, 2009 and April 24, 2009.
