For over 20 years, Alabama has led the way in children’s eye care through a powerful partnership between Vision Research Corporation (VRC) and Sight Savers America (SSA). Each year, kindergarten, second, and fourth grade students receive state-funded vision screenings using advanced, NASA-developed technology. VRC has already screened over 8 million children, identifying vision issues early. But screening is just the beginning. If a child fails, SSA case specialists ensure they receive a follow-up dilated eye exam, working with families to connect them with local eye care providers—regardless of insurance or ability to pay. While nationally, fewer than 1 in 3 children who fail a vision screening receive care, Alabama’s program achieves a 75%+ follow-up rate, ensuring more children get the help they need to thrive.Healthy vision means better learning. Together, VRC and SSA are helping Alabama’s children see clearly and succeed in school—and in life.
